Were You There?
By EVE SEATER
A few years ago a shepherd boy throwing stones broke
an ancient urn in a murky cave along the West shore of
the Dead Sea. To his amazement a, tightly sealed scroll fell
from the urn iu lay at his feet., Poverty stricken, it occurred
to the boy's cunning mind that the scroll could turn a quick
pe'my or two for him. He peddled it to the Muslim Sheikh
in the Market town of Bethlehem., Thus, in 1947, the first
Dead Sea Scroll was discovered, bringing to fresh life an
era a thousand years earlier than the earliest Hebrew man-
uscriptsr The excitement of the discovery of the first and
many )more Dead Sea Scrolls still fascinates the world.
The Village of Wintersville
has long since filled any old
caves. It was not a poverty
stricken goat -herder who dis-
covered buried scrolls at
noon, July 24th, 1962, but a
group of men many of you
know! Construction of a con-
crete retaining wall on the
North side of the Winterville
Elementary School was un-
der way. Harry Hendricks
and ,Burke Sullivan, Jr., were
hard at work. Mayor Tom
Aibaugh and Rudy Taliani
were present, too, when the
workmen turned up the first
water stained bottle. These
men were no more immune
to the excitement of buried
scrolls than anyone el'e.
Curiously, the y drew the
tightly rolled papers from
the bottle and found time
turned b a c k thirty - seven
years!
Perhaps you were one of
the young girls whose sicgna-
tures followed a prayer for
the growth of a sapling tree
obviously planted with the
sealed bottle at its roots.
Written clearly and on i y
slightly faded as the air
struck the paper was the
following:
"We, the sixth, seventh and
eihhth grade girls of the
Wintersville School, ascribe
our names on this paper with
a silent prayer that God may
feed, protect and guide, this
little tree to be powerful
and useful in the future.."

A few hours later a second
bottle, completely airtight,
turned up with another cache
of rolled papers. We've tried
to reproduce these nostalgic
papers for you. On one cray-
oned signatures, probably of
young children, have been
traced in ink ... perhaps by
their teacher.
What happened to the
young tree so tenderly prayed
for by a group of sixth,
seventh an d eighth grade
girls back in April 17th, 1925?
What kind of a tree was it?
Did it fall in the path of pro-
gress as a new Church was
built nearby? What happened
to these young citizens who
are now approaching middle
life?
If you were in the sixth,
seventh or eighth grade in
A pril, 1925, perhaps you
know. You may still remem-
ber the adventure of setting
out a tree and burying with
its roots a scroll of prayer to
which you carefully signed
your name in your finest
handwriting. If you were
there this writer will enjoy
hearing about it.,
WERE YOU THERE?

Early rumors have it that North

as much as the consilidatioa will
constitute an influx of thirty-
eight lettermen under one ,banner.
The 1963 schedule presently has
five home games and five away
gamues with the remote possibility
that one of the away games will.
be reverted to Wintersville be-
