American Legion Stevens-Chiistian Post 557 of Wintersville,
will be held on Friday, May 14th at the First National Bank in
Wintersville.
Pictured above is Bud, Hunter, manager of the Wintersville
Branch of the First National Bank, purchasing the first poppy
from Robert Rice.
The Junior members of the Unit will participate in the sale
of the poppies at Loblaws in the evening.
Mrs. John Ganer and Mrs. William Freeman are Co-Chairmen
of this year's sale.

GARDEN CLUBS TO
HOLD SPRING MEETING
The Jefferson County Garden
Club of O.A.G.C. will hold their
spring open meeting, May 20,
at 8:00 P.M. at the Wintersville
Fire Hall.
Mrs. A.S. Zigler, Garden Club
Chairman of Weirton Women's
Club will demonstrate spring wild
flower arrangements.
The public is invited.
There will be an executive board
meeting at 7:30 P.M.

Three dog bites investigated
by the Police Department of
Wintersville-Many, many com-
plaints of dogs running loose
and causing damage to property-
These are the reasons the
Wintersville Council have taken
drastic action to eliminate this
nuisance and danger!
Under supervision of the Police
department, dogs running loose,
licensed or unlicensed, will be
picked up at any hour day or
night. They will be taken to the
County dog pound where they
may be recovered with payment
of the charge which is custom-
ary.
Cub Scouts of Starkdale Pres-
byterian Church, under super-
vision of Mrs. Harry Jackson,
den mother visited Village Hall
on Tuesday evening. The Police
procedure and equipment was
explained to the scouts by
Patrolman William Trimmer.
They then visited a part of the

Regional Planning Commission,
and the Jefferson County Agri-
cultural Extension Service an-
nounces a conference on refuse
collection and disposal. The
meeting should be especially in-
Sformative to mayors to villages,
township trustees, and other in-
terested persons. The theme of
the conference will be, "Let's
Clean Up and Beautify Jefferson
County!!!i'
Guest speaker will be Sanitary
Engineer Clarence Robinson of
the Ohio Department of Health.
Mr. Robinson has had many years
of experience in the field, knows
the latest proposed state legis-
lation, and can advise local
Officials of successful methods
used in other parts of Ohio.
A question and answer session
will follow Robby's discussion.

Council meeting where they were
permitted to ask questions re-
garding the functions of Council
and procedures in Village Gov-
ernment.
Mr. Charles McJunkin, engineer
was present and reported on the
progress of Wintersville's sewer
project. Approximately five
miles of sewer lines are in the
ground with another fifteen miles
to go. Four of the plants are
under construction and will be
completed as rapidly as possible.
Mr. McJunkin also reported that
the streets where sewer lines
are in will be repaired beginning
this week. Repair work on these
streets is a part of the agree-
ment with the contractor. Both
he and the village appreciate the
consideration and patience of
citizens living in these areas
until it can be completed.
The next regular Council meet-
ing will be on Tuesday, May 18
at 7:30 P.M.
Jefferson County is among 27
Ohio counties that will conduct
crops demonstration plots this
year, according to David Grum,
Associate, agriculture extension
agent, Steubenville.
Grum said the local extension
service is working with Ohio
State University Department of
Agronomy and the Ohio Seed
Improvement Association in

The purpose of the demonsra&-.
tion plots is to display new crop
varieties and to illustrate good
farm management practices,
Grum said.
All plots will be planted with
the highest quality seed avail-
able, Grum stated. It will be
provided by the Seed Improve-
ment Association, the state's
crop certifying agency.

"Realtor Week"

proclamation setting May 23-29
as "Realtor Week" .in Ohio has
been signed by Gov. James A,
Rhodes.
The nationwide celebration of
Realtor week is sponsored in
Ohio by the Ohio Association
of Real Estate Boards and its
75 member boards with a com-
bined membership of nearly
12,000.
In part the proclamation says,
"Ownership of a home is a dream
realized by nearly two-thirds of
the families of this state and
of our nation--a record equalled
by few other countries in the
world.
"Realtors of this state have
aided materially in the attain-
ment of this enviable record
and, through their pledge as in-
dividuals to uphold the rigidCode
of Ethics of the National As-
sociation of Real Estate Boards,
have contributed toward public
confidence in real estate owner--
ship.
"Realtors have added to our
state's prosperity through the use
of their professional skills in
locating, appraising, and man-
aging factories, stores andoffice
buildings throughout the state,
thus providing the state economy
with a sound commercial and
industrial base."
Ohio real estate boards will
stage special events during the
week including special citations
to news media, recognition of
citizens who have made out-
standing contributions to their
communities, bus trips to new
Pd and historical
spots-, for seliM -idtizens, ' and
recognition of student leaders
in schools.
Ralph F. Yeager of Cincinnati
is president of OAREB and Mel
Sirk of Hamilton, chairman of
the Public Relations Committee,
is in charge of the state associa-
tion's participation in Realtor
Week.
The Afterglow
The Afterglow for the Winters-
ville Junior-Senior Prom will
be held Friday night, May 14
at the Jefferson County Sports-
men's Club. Mrs. Ruth Roberts
is general chairman of the after-
glow. Mr.and Mrs. Delbert Vance
and Mrs. Chris Hukill will sign
in the couples and they will
sign out as they leave.
