"Did you know that you have
one of America's most decorated
soldiers living in Wintersville?"
This was the question asked as
I answered the phone at the
"Citizen" office a few weeks
ago. The voice on the other end
of the line was a strange one,
but one which commanded at-
tention. I learned that the voice
was that of a New York Broker,
in Steubenville on business, who
had met the Wintersville resident
by chance and had chatted with
him over lunch. How the Broker
found out the details of the story
is still a mystery, because our
hero is not one to exploit his
fame and who was certainbeyond
doubt, that he, himself, had not
given the slightest clue to his
accomplishments as a soldier.
It was learned later that the
New York Broker was a man by
the name of . Mr. Fleming,
a retired Colonel, which clarifies
his interest in John McCaslin,
undoubtedly, one of America's
most decorated men.
Although Mr. McCaslin has
been asked to release his story
to the news media many times
since his retirement from active
duty on January 31, 1959, he has
steadfastly refused, saying, with-
out disrespect to our country,
"I could take all my medals and
10 and buy a cup of coffee",
which means in part "I don't
need those medals to be a man."
He is indeed a great man who
feels a deep and intense interest
in the United States and its pro-
blems, but one who feels that the
deeds performed for his country
or other countries, as a Soldier
